One of my favourite things about living in London is the endless possibilities of things to do, it makes deciding on the monthly date night activity fun. Depending on how we are feeling ( or how tight money is that month!) date night usually includes eating out, this can range from a quirky London restaurant to a visiting one of our favourite street food markets followed by an ‘activity’ – this can range from anything from going to gig to playing a round of mini golf at Swingers London.
During summer our date night ideas usually end up being more outdoor based but during winter we normally opt to hide from the cold with an indoor activity. There are tons of options if you are looking for fun London date night ideas in Winter and they do not have to expensive.
Here are some of my favourites to help you get planning a super fun date night,
London date night ideas during Winter
Visit a Board Game Cafe
I adore playing board games and if board games automatically make you think Monopoly then you are wrong. Of course Monopoly is a board game classic, however, there is also a whole other world of fun board games now available so much that board game cafes having been popping up all over the city. Board Game cafes are great way to spend an evening in London during winter, games to suit everyone are tightly stacked from floor to ceiling everywhere you look, they have a cosy atmosphere and a really happy one as well. Generally, they are also a good budget date night idea, with prices generally around £4-6 per session ( a session usually means either 1 or 2 hours of game play).
People go to board game cafes to escape the real world for a couple of hours with people they enjoy spending time with. They are also a fantastic if you are looking for first date ideas in London, you will have mutual conversation over your chosen game and you will discover quickly how strong your date’s competitive side is.
My favourite board game cafe in London is Ludoquist in Croydon, South London. There is always a good crowd of people in there and they have an vast array of games to suit all tastes and ages, however, it does get very busy so I would advise booking a table online in advance (free to book). Ludoquist also has a bar which serves alcohol as well as soft and hot drinks as well as a small selection of food but for dinner I would personally recommend heading up the road to Box Park Croydon – a large indoor street food market.
Another popular board game cafe in London is Draughts, which has branches in Waterloo and Hackney.
Go the Theatre
I love musicals, so much so I have seen Wicked in the theatre 8 times, I cannot get enough of it. In London we are so lucky to have so many amazing theatre shows on every single night, whether they are long standing shows such as Les Miserables or limited time only shows such as The Heathers.
There is often a big misconception that visiting the theatre in London is expensive and rightly so, it is not the cheapest date night idea, however finding budget theatre tickets is possible. Encore Tickets sell tickets to hundreds of shows in London at extremely competitive prices. They often have various offers such as ‘no booking fee’ (this is currently available on tickets for the hilarious Book of Mormon) or sales on certain shows – I would recommend having a look at their website and being flexible on the show you want to see if you want low cost tickets.
My top recommendations for London musicals include The Lion King, Les Miserables and Wicked. However, if musicals are not your thing and you prefer a play then buy tickets for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.
Many of London’s top selling shows are based in the Westend where you will be spoilt of choice when it comes to restaurants. If you want to a few drinks before heading to the theatre then stop by Leicester Square where you can have a cocktail while taking in my favourite view of London’s skyline.
Take on an Escape the room challenge
My competitive nature also loves an escape room, however it is a great date night idea as you are working together rather than against each other. Escape rooms have become a massive tourism trend over the past couple of years which means there are tons to choose from across London and pretty much any theme you can imagine.
I really enjoyed the complexity of ClueQuest in Shoreditch which at present offers five different themed rooms to choose from and I am desperate to get book into the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by Enigma Quests. If you do not mind travelling slightly further out I was extremely impressed by the escape rooms at Tulley’s Farm in Surrey.
Escapes rooms are not the cheapest date night idea but they are really good fun. To save money I would recommend keeping an eye on Groupon as often newly opened companies will have great offers on there as a way of advertising a new room.

Visit a comedy night
Stand-up comedy is a fun way to spend an evening in London, obviously, who doesn’t like to laugh? Mainly across the weekends there are tons of comedy nights in London. The nights generally consist of 3-4 different stand up comedians in an intimate venue.
Most of the time you will not find out who is performing before the night, mostly likely you will see up and coming comedians but on occasion you will get to see very well known comedians who are looking to practice new material on a fresh audience. It is a complete luck of the draw on who you will see but you are guaranteed they will all be great at their talent.
Comedy nights are usually very low cost making them a great budget date night idea during winter (or anytime of the year!), due to many of the venues being set inside bars or clubs you also tend to get free entry into the club afterwards as well. Again, I recommend Encore Tickets to purchase your comedy night tickets, they offer great prices and details of what to expect on the night.
Play Shuffleboard in Shoreditch
Shoreditch maybe known as the hipster part of London but the hipster title has also brought some really fun and unique activities to this part of East London, one of them being a Shuffleboard club. The London Shuffle Club describes itself as a ‘mix of tin pin bowling and curling’.
Inside you will find 6 shuffleboard lanes and 2 outdoor lanes, making it a great option for a London date night idea during the summer as well, as well as a cocktail bar and an area to buy fresh cooked pizza. At the weekend, in true Shoreditch style, they also offer the Bottomless Shuffle Brunch – two-hour session includes bottomless prosecco, draught beers and delicious pizza with an obligatory shuffleboard taster session, tickets for this is priced at £32 per person. Afterwards you will be free to spend a day in Shoreditch and seeing everything else it has to offer.
London during winter does not have to mean boring, admittedly my favourite time in the city will always be Summer but it does not mean date night has to go on hold. There are tons of fun date night ideas in London during the winter and they do not have to be expensive.
