East Street Restaurant – A Taste Tour of Thailand

eaststreet Aside from Italian, Asian food is my favourite cuisine, hands down, but as I have previously mentioned , it is hard to find authentic tasting Asian food in the UK, a lot of places seem to add a western taste that does not always work quite right. So when I was introduced to a little restaurant called East Streetlocated just off of Tottenham Court Road, I was instantly obsessed.
East Street provides the authentic tastes of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia, and Japan through healthy, high-quality food at value-for-money prices with quick, friendly service, simple as. It takes a lot for me to visit the same restaurant more than once, I like variety and enjoy finding new great places, but I have been a repeat visitor of East Street over the past few years and have never left disappointed.

Each month the supper club will focus on a different Asian country and aims to provide an interactive culinary tour of that area through a five-course dinner, for October I was invited to explore the food of Thailand.

Pad Thai Chicken / Vegetable
Creamy Red Vegetable Curry
Thai Tamarind Duck /Tamarind Tofu
Mango Sorbet

I could go on and tell you about how great every dish was because it was, it was incredible in fact. If you want fresh Thai food as authentic tasting as what you would get in Chiang Mai, then go here, I have yet to find better in London and I have tried a lot of places, but what I really want to talk about the is the experience of the Supper Club. The effort that has been put into these evenings is brilliant and rarely seen at a busy central London restaurant.
east street When we arrived, there was already a bowl of varied ingredients placed on our table – lemongrass, chilli, lime, peanuts and coconut milk, it was explained to us that these are the staple for every Thai dish, creating the well known, salty, sweet, sour and spicy flavours behind our favourite meals that capture all of our taste buds. The chefs at East Street use these ingredients fresh in every meal to help create the authentic taste as good as that on the Khao San Road. Between each course, our waiter spoke to use about what flavours we picked up from each dish, which really helped me to actually think about what I was eating and the work that goes into these dishes, we were also told various trivia about traditional Thai dining such as many believe that eating alone will bring bad luck.

The discussion and time spent explaining the culinary techniques created an engaging evening experience rather than just dining out, for someone who takes an interest in learning about food I would fully recommend the supper club. It also brought new dishes to my interest, I probably never would have ordered tamarind tofu normally, but after sampling it on the evening, I would now order it again or now try to recreate at home. It has made me want to be more adventurous with dishes and not always stick to my regular favourites.
pa110253 east street The East Street supper clubs are £22 a person, this also includes a cocktail or beer, I think this is brilliant value for central London , as each dish is a good size and I came away satisfied. These evenings will continue over the next couple of months, with the next one being Malaysian I believe and hopefully, I will be around to join again. In the future, I would love to see East Street hold a cookery class at the restaurant as I think it would be fantastic, it is obvious their chefs have a passion for what they are creating as reflected in their food.
